UTV News - Man arrested over Kerr murder

Constable Ronan Kerr, murdered in County Tyrone in Northern Ireland by cowardly renegade IRA thugs who placed a bomb under his car, is the 1,027th Irish Police Officer to be killed on the Island of Ireland since 1826, and 1 more [ a Garda Sgt Reid from the Republic ] was killed on UN duty in Sarajevo, Bosnia. 307 of these brave men and women have been killed in Northern Ireland since 1969,and 15 more [ Garda ] in the South in that period, plus another 22 retired Officers in Northern Ireland from 1973 to 1998. These Officers alone, and never their murderers, deserve to be remembered and honored as true martyrs. They also remind us of the huge presence of Irish-Americans among the ranks of those on the Roll of Honor of NYPD and so many other US Law Enforcement bodies, such as the 9-11 Roll of Honor. The whole Island of Ireland is today united as never before behind the coffin of Ronan Kerr, and utterly determined to prevail over the tiny, vicious gangs which threaten all of us across the Island. The presence of the new Irish PM, Enda Kenny, his Justice/Defence Minister, Alan Shatter, and their Commissioner, marching alongside their Northern counterparts, shows the total commitment to a united, firm and unyielding determination to defeat these murderous gangs.
